Media Literacy in Adult Education

“Exchange of teaching and learning strategies: media literacy in adult education” was an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnerships project for six partners from France, Estonia, Italy, Sweden, Spain and Malta. This eighteen months project aimed at developing initiatives addressing spheres of adult education and exchanges of experience and best practices in preventing radicalisation via media literacy. Project’s coordinator was MITRA FRANCE non-governmental organisation.

General objectives of the project were the promotion of adult education and cooperation between partners and recognition of non-formal education within and across national borders.

The specific objectives of the project were:
* extending and developing educators’ competences in media literacy to counter radicalisation of the population;
* developing and promoting ICT skills in adult education;
* creating a network between project partners and local stakeholders.

This project responded directly to the needs of adult educators through media literacy workshops. Project participants gained various media abilities applicable to prevent radicalisation. They acquired media competences via educational experiences, exchanged good practices in media literacy and discovered common interests in a creative and positive space.

Partners have reinforced international networking by sharing best practices in media literacy that was compiled in the project Toolkit. Staff members of partners’ organisations acquired new instruments of teaching creative reading and writing to counter radicalisation and reduce the spread of biased information. They have learned how to analyse media content from different angles and create new media content. This project also fostered intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding of participants and partners’ organisations.

Three non-governmental organisations, two small enterprises and one foundation were involved in this project. The media approach in education for adults was targeted through non-formal learning methods, learning by doing, which aimed at enhancing experiences and competences of staff members of partners’ organisations.

More than 120 participants – staff members and adult learners from partners countries were directly involved in the project and more than 1200 people indirectly during dissemination activities online.

Three international meetings in France, Malta and Sweden and two training courses in Italy and Spain in combination with local activities were complementary for exchange and implementation of best practices and learning from each other. Partners disseminated locally and internationally the Toolkit of best practices in media literacy that were exchanged and implemented during this project.

The long-term impacts of this partnership are the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences of project participants and their contribution to the strengthening media literacy as a mean of countering online and ordinary radicalisation and stigmatisation. The project’s Toolkit is a tangible project result. It is available online for free.
It is also sustainable because it can be constantly added with new materials from project partners’organisations and also from other institutions. Few partners from the project consortium together with few other organisations applied with new Erasmus+ project in 2018 which include intellectual outputs.
